Experts challenge parents and kids to use social media as a tool for good

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — We all know how kids love to use social media, but this school year experts are challenging them to use it as a tool to help with their education.
8News reporter Sydney Cameron shows us how social media can be used anywhere from homework help to enhancing your college application.
You may have seen 17-year-old De’monte Buckingham on the court for Henrico High School… or on Instagram and Twitter.
“I’m very active on social media,” De’monte says.
“Social media has gotten a bad rap, and it’s a tool we really can use for our good,” says Marcy Williams, CEO of Kollege & Kareer Youth.
This school year, social media safety expert Marcy Williams is challenging parents and kids to do just that.
If you’re an athlete like De’monte, she says market yourself online.
“Create your own YouTube channel. And as your child starts to apply for college or jobs, again, you can share that youtube channel, a one-stop shopping to know you.”
De’monte’s had some success with that.
“I put up highlights of stuff like that,” he says.

"These posts can spread within milliseconds. I have seen posts that go viral very quickly, especially those unfortunately that have such a negative connotation," said Marcy Williams, a specialist in social media safety and author of Is My Face in Cyberspace? A Social Media Safety Handbook. "If there's fighting, if there's misappropriate language, I have seen them go viral. So it's really really dangerous. You want to be smart."
